Father Image

The lockdown has given me the chance to stay at and work from home these past few months. By being at home, I have been experiencing what it is to become more involved in the nitty-gritty of looking after one's family as well as looking after myself. Such experience brings to mind my childhood days spent in the house of my uncle and godfather Edgardo Samaniego in Kawit, Cavite.

Ninong Eddie provided me and my siblings the father image when we were growing up. Every morning, he and Ninang Aida (his wife) would wake us up for school. As we make our way to the dining room, food is already prepared. Ninong Eddie and Ninang Aida would be up and about for a brand new day: cleaning the house, tending their verdant plants, and look after my two younger siblings who were not yet in school during that time. In the evening, they would make time to check on how we were doing in school.

On some weekends, Ninong Eddie would bring Philip (his youngest son) and I to jog or take a walk. He kept himself fit by having a balanced diet and regular exercise. In the summer of 1985, various groups in Kawit formed their sports team to compete with each other. He was part of the "Di Pa Osla" Basketball team (Osla is the reverse of the word 'laos' or obsolete in English. Hence, "Di Pa Osla" meant "Not yet obsolete"). We have watched a number of their games held in the church patio. Observing then, he and his team mates proved that they are up to the sports competition.

Ninong Eddie also encouraged us to say our prayers and would be with us when we go to church for Mass. I remember, when I was not feeling well, he told me we'll attend Mass on TV. In a way, we were still spiritually united with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. He was also an active member of the Adoracion Nocturna Filipina, a lay organization devoted to night adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.

It won't be complete if I don't mention the fun and laughter with Ninong Eddie with his jokes and exuberant stories. His cheerfulness made our day. It gave us the lighter side of life. His stories, especially when he was growing up and helping his parents to look after their family as well as when he had his own family, are heartwarming.

Looking back to these have helped me realise the love and sacrifices conscientious parents would do for their family. Having my own brood, I take on board what Ninong Eddie has taught us: presence, well-being, and fun.

Happy 90th birthday, Ninong Eddie! Thank you so much for being such a wonderful uncle to us five siblings. Your example, wisdom, and commitment are truly inspirational. We may not be there with you right now, but we're one with you in celebrating your big day. Enjoy your day!  May the good Lord continue to bless and keep you always. We love you!
