Munggo

Image hosting by TinyPic

Manong,

How come people use to cook munggo every Friday?

Jover

It has also been a question to me ages ago. As a kid I noticed that one of our viands on Fridays was ginisang munggo. (I was told it was my paternal grandfather’s favourite.) The question was gradually answered when I learned about Abstinence – the practice of not eating meat on prescribed days – in my elementary and high school days. As devout Catholics, my grandparents taught their household to abstain from meat on every Friday, the day when Jesus our Lord died on the cross. Nowadays, the prescribed days of abstinence in our country are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Be it as it may, some families still abstain on Fridays. Apart from munggo, we could see fish of all sorts (e.g. daing na bangus, galunggong, pusit, etc) on the dining table.

Lent is here once again. As we make sacrifices like abstinence let’s do it not only to free our bodies from eating meat, but also to alleviate the sufferings of the poor in our midst.
